To realize the foregoing, the Fund desires to urgently recruit a person of relevant expertise and experience to fill the key vacant position of Programmes Assistant.

Job Summary
The Programmes Assistant reports directly to the Programmes Coordinator and works closely with the Programmes Officer and Finance & Grants Management Accountant. 
He/she will assist with duties within the AUF Programmes Department including but not restricted to assisting in programmes management, grants management, programmes communication, reporting, fundraising and learning including coming up with innovative ideas on how AUF can be more effective in supporting civil society interventions aimed at addressing serious social justice challenges facing communities in the region.
In his/her work, the Programmes Assistant will be assisted by the Programmes Intern and the Grants Management Intern.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in conducting of research and mapping of emerging issues and trends in human rights and social justice work within the East African region that can be useful in determining AUF funding support.
  • Assist in programmes’ evaluation, learning and reporting by tracking and documenting AUF programmes’ work as well as generating monthly, quarterly and annual reports with clear analysis of progress in meeting set goals, noted gaps and lessons learnt.
  • Assist in programmes planning. This shall include preparation of Programmes work-plans (weekly, monthly and annually), scheduling of meetings as well as making logistical arrangements and documentation of all meetings including grantee convenings.
  • Assist in grants management. This shall include preparation of background information and brief analysis of submitted grants applications for use by the Grants Review Committee; preparing and maintaining of grants correspondence; monitoring projects implementation compliance by funded partners; review of grantee reports and assisting in grants monitoring, evaluation and learning.
  • Maintain and update print and electronic documentation and dissemination of key programmes information. This shall include support in ensuring consistent and regular dissemination of Programmes’ work in the mainstream and social media as well as generation of AUF publications.
  • Assist in fundraising including in the identification of funding gaps, possible funding partners and development of funding proposals.
Desired Qualifications
  • A first (Bachelors) Degree in any relevant social sciences including public policy, international relations, political science, social studies, development studies, law or related fields.
  • Post-graduate qualifications in project planning and management will be an added advantage.
  • Demonstrable passion and familiarity with current human rights and social justice issues, the East African Community (EAC) regional integration and people-centred development. 
  • Demonstrable strong interest in pan-Africanist, rights-based discourses surrounding regional development particularly on how to address the continued underdevelopment, poverty, structural violence and other forms of social injustice in East Africa is highly desirable.
  • At least 1 year experience in human rights and social work particularly in East Africa. 
  • Experience in working in a grant-making organisation in grants management, program management and monitoring and evaluation particularly with grassroots/community-based organizations or movements in East Africa is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) .
  • Excellent research, analytical and strategic thinking skills and experience.
  • Excellent communication skills: written, verbal and presentation skills in English. Proficiency in Kiswahili and French will be a strong advantage.
  • Ability to work and deliver assignments on time including working within short deadlines without or with minimal supervision.
  • Reliable and able to handle confidential issues.
  • Sensitivity, flexibility, tolerance and ability to work both independently and as a part of a team.
  • Possession of good office skills and etiquette. A sense of good humour too would be highly welcome!
