Consultancy for the formulation of AGRA’s Strategy on Agricultural Mechanization

Organizational Overview: The Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) is an Africa based organization working in partnership with governments, agricultural research organizations, farmers, private sector, civil society and other rural development stakeholders to significantly and sustainably improve the productivity and incomes of resource poor farmers in Africa.

AGRA’s programs in the areas of seeds, soil health, market viability, supportive policies, innovative finance and strengthening farmer organizations work to bring about transformational change across the agricultural value chain.

AGRA has its headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya and an office in Accra, Ghana.
Call for Proposals

Pursuant to the above mentioned goal, AGRA would like to conduct a feasibility study on mechanization opportunities and challenges that exist in Sub-Sahara Africa (SSA) that would inform its investments towards mechanization of Smallholder farming systems.
Agricultural mechanization along the value chain (from production to post-harvest operations) is a key strategic lever for improvement in the productivity of smallholder farming, as it both accelerates the accomplishment of agricultural activity, thus freeing up labor, and supports new and emerging agronomy, ultimately improving the profitability of all investments in the value chain.
Successful mechanization of key segments in the value chain holds the potential to increase involvement of youth and women in lucrative segments of the value chain; as well as through profitable mechanization services.

Recognizing the potential role that agricultural mechanization could play in enhancing a successful transformation of smallholder farming in SSA, an immediate priority is to articulate a broad vision and strategy for integrating agricultural mechanization into AGRAs portfolio of interventions.
A feasibility study will thus be conducted to address the following issues:
  • Description and nature of demand for mechanization services by Smallholder farmers (SHFs);
  • Types of equipment, managerial and technical support and mix of services which would optimize the use of mechanization services by SHFs in target countries;
  • The type of social and economic organization of farmers required to access to mechanization services;
  • The effect of uncertain land tenure of farm holdings on the viability of agricultural mechanization service delivery; and
  • The optimal financing plan.
Proposal Submission

All interested parties are asked to submit their detailed technical & financial proposals by close of business February 7 2014 at 17.00 Hours Nairobi time to the following email address: fosca@agra.org
