The Kenya Plantation and Agricultural Workers Union (KPAWU) which represents over 300,000 members from the Agricultural sector in Kenya, including tea, coffee, and cut flower Is a trade union and an affiliate of the Central Organization of Trade Unions COTU (K) established in 1963 with its head offices in Nakuru, Kenya.
 
The Union seeks once again to appoint a suitable candidate in the position of a Legal Officer aged below 35 years.
 

Job Description: The legal officer shall represent KPAWU in litigation, legal administrative proceedings and disputes resolution proceedings; provide legal, tactical and strategic advice. 

He /She shall help in the preparation of legal briefs to the Union’s General Secretary for all Court Cases and liaise with the office of the General Secretary in relation to pending legal matters and prepare legal briefs to the Union leadership.
 
Other Duties and Responsibilities
  • Draft agreements and contractual documents including interpretation.
  • Undertake research on assigned legal issues.
  • Represent the Union in the Industrial Court and in all other courts.
  • Litigation and legal advice on Trade Union matters.
  • Take custody of and ensure safe keeping of legal documentation.
  • Review contracts and leases drawn by third parties.
Competencies
 
Professionalism
  • Knowledge of Labour laws and Conventions coupled with the ability to apply legal principles, concepts and policies in the context of litigation of a range of legal issues.
  • Knowledge of the jurisprudence of the Trade Unions.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and handle confidential material with discretion, and analyze and research a range of complex legal issues within tight deadlines.
Qualification and Experiences
  • A Bachelor of Law (LLB) Degree from a recognized university.
  • Relevant working experience in a similar position or legal firm.
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Law from Kenya School of Law
  • Been admitted as an advocate of High Court of Kenya
  • A current practicing Certificate.
  • Proficiency in Computer Applications.
