APHRC Senior Research Scientist, Health Challenges and Systems Job in Kenya

Vacancy: Senior Research Scientist, Health Challenges and Systems (HCS) 
The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is an international non-profit, non-governmental organization that carries out high quality, policy relevant research on population, health, education and developmental issues facing sub-Saharan Africa. 
Research in the Health Challenges and Systems Program focuses on critical health systems needs and challenges; global environmental change and its health impacts; and infectious and non-communicable diseases. 


APHRC seeks to recruit a Senior Research Scientist to lead its HCS program. 
  • Define and drive the strategic direction of the Program 
  • Provide leadership in the implementation of projects, define resource needs and allocate staff time, and ensure that resources are used effectively, including reviewing of project expenditure reports 
  • Ensure that all project deliverables are met according to expected standards and in a timely manner 
  • Lead the program in fundraising for new initiatives 
  • Review and sign-off performance appraisals of staff under the Program 
  • Ensure cohesion and shared vision amongst program staff 
  • Ensure projects in thematic areas are efficiently managed 
  • Support the planning and implementation of country and regional research uptake and policy influence actions
  • Support junior researchers in the program to write scientific papers
  • Disseminate research findings using scientific and non – scientific avenues
  • Establish and maintain relations with key partners and institutional donors
  • Secure and manage the necessary human and material resources in the program
  • Represent the Center in high – level national, regional and international forums including relevant technical working groups and expert committees 
Qualifications and Experience
  • PhD in Public Health or a related discipline and at least seven years of post-doctoral experience in an academic or research institution 
  • Actively engaged in research with a focus on any of the HCS Program’s thematic areas of health systems, non-communicable diseases, infectious diseases, and the environment and health in developing countries, in general, and sub-Saharan Africa, in particular.
  • Candidates whose research focus is on non-communicable disease will have an added advantage 
  • Well-grounded in research methods and have very strong quantitative skills 
  • Proven experience in leading and managing large scale household surveys or working with large datasets 
  • Strong writing skills and a very good record of publications on health issues in developing countries 
  • Strong track record of fundraising for research projects 
  • Proven ability to work effectively with funding agencies 
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills 
  • Experience in providing leadership in an academic or research institution.
