Results, Learning and Research Coordinator
Nairobi, Kenya
Program / Department Summary: Mercy Corps implements high-quality, analytical development work in very difficult places. 
We have been operating in Kenya since 2008 and are presently implementing development programs across the Central, Rift Valley, North Western and Northern Eastern regions of Kenya. 
Youth Empowered for Success (YES!) is a partnership with The Coca-Cola Africa Foundation, Kuza Biashara, and Harambee which seeks to enhance employment for 25,000 young people in six African countries by 2018. Mercy Corps is the lead implementer in Kenya, Uganda, Liberia, Nigeria, and Tunisia. 
The program seeks to build a knowledge base to attract funding to scale the program in a Phase II, so research, evaluation, and communications are critical.
Essential Job Functions:
Monitoring and Evaluation
  • Focal point for functioning of YES!’s Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning system being implemented by in-country teams, including activity monitoring and baseline/endline. Conduct quality checking, and ensure that overall program dashboard is regularly updated;
  • Lead orientation of MEL systems in new country programs as required;
  • Analyze baseline/endline data to ascertain impact of various interventions and lead ad hoc ‘mini evaluations’ of specific program components, including qualitative research for triangulation.
  • Produce communication materials about program progress and/or findings from evaluation studies.
Research Projects & Thought Leadership
  • Lead the program’s research and learning initiatives, in coordination with the Program Director, in order to generate key learnings about the program.
  • Conduct research and prepare practical reports for dissemination based on experiences from program implementation.
  • Lead dissemination efforts, including working with HQ, partners, and others to reach external stakeholders.
  • Communicate findings from M&E and research activities within Mercy Corps teams, project partners, and wider stakeholders.
  • Establish and curate a YES! blog for external stakeholders, which functions as a convening point for learning from all of the YES! program countries.
  • Participate in a variety of external forums/workshops/conferences/sector coordination meetings for knowledge sharing and communication of best practices and findings from the program.
  • Conduct himself/herself both professionally and personally in such a manner as to bring credit to Mercy Corps and to not jeopardize its humanitarian mission.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Organizational Learning: As part of our commitment to organizational learning and in support of our understanding that learning organizations are more effective, efficient and relevant to the communities they serve – we expect all team members to commit 5% of their time to learning activities that benefit Mercy Corps as well as themselves.

Supervisory Responsibility: None
Reports Directly To: YES! Program Director
Works Directly With: YES! M&E Focal Points in the 5 implementing countries, M&E Focal Points in program partners and Program teams in the 5 countries.
Knowledge and Experience:
  • 2-4 years of experience in design and management of monitoring, evaluation and learning systems for field-based development programs.
  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant area. Masters an added advantage.
  • Experience in knowledge management, data collection, analytics and data management.
  • Experience using Management Information Systems (MIS), including mobile-based monitoring systems and dashboards.
  • Exceptional writing skills, and strong Excel (or SPSS, STATA, RED) skills.
  • Familiarity developing and managing content for any form of media.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop relevant research methodologies, and to produce high quality research products.
  • Willingness to travel to YES! country programs in Uganda, Tunisia, Nigeria and Liberia
  • Experience in, and passion for, youth (and youth employment) programming a plus.
