We are currently recruiting for an Energy Business Development Consultant. This his role has the potential to either be located in the UK or East Africa. East Africa candidates will need to have the pre-existing right to live and work in Kenya.

As a member of Practical Action Consulting’s (PAC’s) energy team to be responsible for managing and delivering key energy high-quality technical consultancy through project management in the international energy and development sector: managing current projects, and winning and developing new business consultancy opportunities in the area of energy access.

In this role you will be responsible for:

  • As a project manager to be responsible (with regular support from the Energy Team Leader) for all aspects of project delivery, including technical research and analysis, budget and contract management, client relationships, partner co-ordination/facilitation, production of reports/knowledge products and team management, including inputs from regional offices and associates. However, responsibility for other project team members’ inputs and for quality assurance is shared between the Energy Team Leader and Energy Consultants.
  • Core Responsibility as the project manager for the EPSRC Coventry and ESRC Edinburgh humanitarian energy projects in the first instance. Take on other projects over time.
  • To contribute to the achievement of PAC UK’s business strategy by winning, managing and undertaking work in the energy and development (and associated) sectors within PAC UK’s strategic focus areas on energy. To win and assist in winning new work from international donors and commercial organisations by supporting (and where appropriate leading) proposal development activities, developing and maintaining networks at mid-level (technical staff) in the donor (e.g. DFID), international agency (e.g. UN), NGO (e.g. Christian Aid and Oxfam), consulting, academic and engineering sectors.
  •  To work as a member of PAC’s international energy team to support and learn from colleagues in PAC’s overseas offices and build the collective capacity of the team. To undertake any other tasks as assigned by the Energy Team Leader and the Head of Humanitarian.

This is a broad remit that requires someone with significant relevant experience, knowledge of off-grid energy access technologies, understanding of energy access issues, excellent communication, networking and influencing skills and strong analytical and organisational project management capabilities.

You will have a Master’s degree or higher in a relevant subject and have experience in a commercial environment delivering results to client deadlines.

This role will require considerable experience of managing multi-country, multi-year, multi-million pound programmes in complex environments.

Your communication and influencing skills across cultures will be excellent and you will have a good network of contacts amongst research and consulting firms and understand the requirements of funding agencies.

Fluency in English is essential and advanced French preferred.

Salary: Grade B: £34,371 – £35,778 depending on experience.
