Maneno Yetu Research Study Programmer / Data Manager Job in Kisumu

Program Description: Family AIDS and Education Services (FACES) is collaboration between the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and University of Washington (UW) – and other affiliated institutions.

Family AIDS Care and Education Services (FACES) program, is a comprehensive HIV prevention and Treatment program managing many sites within in Kisumu County.

FACES program is seeking for a self-motivated and proactive individual to fill the vacancy below:

Background Information: Maneno Yetu research study will engage adolescents to develop sexual health and HIV prevention messaging. When adolescents are given the opportunity to create narratives that reflect what is relevant to them, the creative process may result in prevention messages that are more likely to resonate with their peers.

The study components include focus groups, cross-sectional surveys, prevention messaging workshops and in-depth interviews.

Vacant Position: Programmer / Data Manager

Reports to: Study Coordinator

Location: Kisumu and Muhoroni sub county

Duration: 1 year Renewable Contract as per KEMRI Scheme of Service. The first 3 months is a probation period

Summary: The Maneno Yetu Programmer / Data Manager will be responsible for developing and supporting the electronic tools and systems for the study.

The programmer/data manager will work with a multi-disciplinary study team from KEMRI, UCSF and the University of California, Berkeley (UCB).

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Participate in the design of the data collection tools for the study
  • Program the data collection tools for the study
  • Maintain and support the data collection tools for the study
  • Configure the data collection devices (Android tablets, laptops)
  • Design, develop and manage the databases for storage of study data
  • Develop user manuals for all data systems in use for the study
  • Support training of the study team (coordinator, research assistants)
  • Support deployment of the study systems at the site level
  • Provide oversight for the data quality assurance process
  • Troubleshoot data-related problems and implement corrective action
  • Conduct data extraction from study databases
  • Provide technical support for all study components
  • Collaborate closely with the UCSF Maneno Yetu Research Coordinator and Statistician / Data Manager
  • Participate in study meetings (in-person, internet conference calls)
  • Flexibility to work non-business hours; being available for calls outside of business hours due to time differences between the U.S. and Kenya
  • Assist with dissemination of study findings

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Computer Science
  • Master’s degree or equivalent experience in Computer Science preferred
  • Degree in Statistics, Epidemiology, HMIS or related degree preferred

  • Ability to formulate techniques for quality data collection to ensure adequacy, accuracy and legitimacy of the study data
  • Ability to devise and implement efficient and secure procedures for data handling and analysis with attention to all technical aspects
  • Ability to translate user requirements into functional specifications
  • High level of competency in Microsoft applications including Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
  • Fluency in English, Dholuo and Kiswahili
  • Ability to work effectively independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to effectively handle multiple priorities and organize workload
  • Excellent time and resource management skills
  • Ability to work with tight timelines and meet deadlines
  • Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team
