Program Description: Family AIDS and Education Services (FACES) is collaboration between the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and University of Washington (UW) – and other affiliated institutions.

Family AIDS Care and Education Services (FACES) program, is a comprehensive HIV prevention and Treatment program managing many sites within in Kisumu County.

FACES program is seeking for a self-motivated and proactive individual to fill the vacancy below:

Background Information: Maneno Yetu research study will engage adolescents to develop sexual health and HIV prevention messaging. When adolescents are given the opportunity to create narratives that reflect what is relevant to them, the creative process may result in prevention messages that are more likely to resonate with their peers.

The study components include focus groups, cross-sectional surveys, prevention messaging workshops and in-depth interviews

Vacant Position: Senior Research Assistant

( 1 Position)

Reports to: Study Coordinator

Location: Kisumu and Muhoroni sub county

Duration: 1 year Renewable Contract as per KEMRI Scheme of Service. The first 3 months is a probation period

Summary: The Maneno Yetu Senior Research Assistant will be responsible for implementing the study protocol and day-to-day operations of the research study. The senior research assistant will work with a multi-disciplinary study team from KEMRI, UCSF and the University of California, Berkeley (UCB).

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Implement all components of the study protocol at the site level
  • Ensure compliance to protocol and procedures for all study components
  • Recruit participants for all study components
  • Conduct all study components in the preferred language (English, Dholuo, Kiswahili) of participants
  • Administer the informed consent process
  • Lead the focus groups and prevention messaging workshops
  • Conduct the in-depth interviews
  • Administer the cross-sectional survey
  • Track participants status for all study components
  • Conduct follow-up tracking of cross-sectional survey participants who are eligible to participate in subsequent study components (prevention messaging workshop, in-depth interviews)
  • Provide technical support for all study components
  • Ensure completeness of all data collected (recordings, field notes, survey)
  • Train and mentor the research assistants
  • Supervise and monitor the performance of the research assistants
  • Participate in study meetings (in-person, internet conference calls)
  • Flexibility to work non-business hours; being available for calls outside of business hours due to time differences between the U.S. and Kenya
  • Assist with dissemination of study findings

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent degree in Medicine, Nursing, Public Health, Sociology, Anthropology, Population Studies or relevant field preferred
  • Diploma in a health-related or social science-related field required

  • Training and experience in conducting quantitative surveys preferred
  • Training and experience in conducting focus groups and in-depth interviews preferred

  • Experience with coding and qualitative analysis software preferred
