Program Description: Family AIDS and Education Services (FACES) is collaboration between the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and University of Washington (UW) – and other affiliated institutions.

Family AIDS Care and Education Services (FACES) program, is a comprehensive HIV prevention and Treatment program managing many sites within in Kisumu County.

FACES program is seeking for a self-motivated and proactive individual to fill the vacancy below:

Background Information: Maneno Yetu research study will engage adolescents to develop sexual health and HIV prevention messaging. When adolescents are given the opportunity to create narratives that reflect what is relevant to them, the creative process may result in prevention messages that are more likely to resonate with their peers.

The study components include focus groups, cross-sectional surveys, prevention messaging workshops and in-depth interviews

Vacant Position: Study Coordinator

Reports to: Principal Investigator

Location: Kisumu

Duration: 1 year Renewable Contract as per KEMRI Scheme of Service. The first 3 months is a probation period

Summary: The Maneno Yetu Study Coordinator will be responsible for providing oversight and technical support for the implementation of the study protocol and for the day-to-day operations of the research study.

The study coordinator will work with a multi-disciplinary study team from KEMRI, UCSF and the University of California, Berkeley (UCB).

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Coordinate implementation of all components of the study protocol at the site level
  • Provide technical support for all study components
  • Ensure compliance to protocol and procedures for all study components
  • Coordinate communications between investigators and research staff
  • Ensure recruitment and implementation goals are met
  • Ensure study timelines are met
  • Oversee collection and management of data for all study components by research staff
  • Assist with administrative needs of research study, including procurement of supplies
  • Establish and monitor study plans, schedules, work hours, budgets and expenditures
  • Perform detailed daily record keeping and reporting
  • Organize and participate in study meetings (in-person, internet conference calls)
  • Flexibility to work non-business hours; being available for calls outside of business hours due to time differences between the U.S. and Kenya
  • Organize, attend and participate in stakeholder and other related meetings
  • Prepare necessary presentation materials for meetings
  • Document and follow up on important actions and decisions from meetings
  • Train and mentor the Kenya-based research staff
  • Supervise and monitor the performance of the Kenya-based research staff
  • Collaborate closely with the UCSF Maneno Yetu Research Coordinator
  • Build strong cross-functional relationships with the FACES Community Health Initiative (CHI) team
  • Assist with dissemination of study findings

Required Qualifications

  • Master of Science or an equivalent degree in Medicine, Nursing, Public Health or relevant field strongly preferred
  • Bachelor of Science or an equivalent Degree in Medicine, Nursing, Public Health or relevant field

Jobs in Kenya 2018Required Experience

Experience with supervising research for public health or clinical studies

o 3 or more years for applicant with Master’s degree

o 7 or more years for applicant with Bachelor’s degree

Other Required Skills

  • Prior leadership experience managing research teams preferred
  • Experience with community health initiatives preferred
  • Experience with research studies or programs focused on adolescents preferred
  • Experience with qualitative research preferred
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
  • Fluency in English, Dholuo and Kiswahili
  • Ability to work effectively independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to effectively handle multiple priorities and organize workload
  • Excellent time and resource management skills
  • Ability to work with tight timelines and meet deadlines
  • Ability to manage and supervise a multi-disciplinary team
  • Ability to plan, initiate, coordinate and enforce protocols, policies and procedures
  • Experience using computers for a variety of tasks, including proficiency in organizing conference calls and typing to record meeting minutes
  • High level of competency in Microsoft applications including Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Familiarity with using Android tablets to collect survey data and troubleshoot tablet malfunctions
  • Knowledge of file management, transcription, and other administrative procedures
