Job Location: Nairobi, Kenya

Context: How does an organization remain a strong humanitarian actor in Kenya, maintaining its good reputation and credibility if it is not drilling boreholes anymore? And how does such an organization respond to humanitarian situations if it focusses more on influencing and campaigning?

Through your passion and, being part of the bold and realistic Oxfam humanitarian team in Kenya that is shifting from direct operational service delivery to building local institution’s leadership to respond to humanitarian imperative, by influencing and campaigning for a sustained systemic change to positively impact the lives of the disenfranchised and vulnerable citizens.

What’s more, Oxfam’s humanitarian systems programme design aims to reduce the chronic vulnerability of marginalised women and men and, enable them to progress towards self-sufficiency with support from the Kenyan Government.

Various ways of undertaking this aligned to Oxfam’s 5-year strategy in Kenya (2015—2020): a system strengthening approach, piloting innovative and gender sensitive projects in WASH and Social protection with the aim for the pilots to be taken over by the Government and implemented at scale.

Oxfam in Kenya works through partnerships’ and coalitions adding value to the capacity of county and national actors to be better prepared for slow and rapid onset crises, and timely response while ensuring a sound DRM policy and implementation framework are in place.

The WASH Strategist role will: –

Hold an undergraduate/post graduate degree in Social Science or Economics, have at least 4 years’ practical experience in WASH and Public health in the humanitarian context, especially in emergency conditions (background in engineering is an added advantage).

The role holder will lead in the design and implementation of Oxfam in Kenya’s humanitarian and long term WASH programming — piloting innovative programme approaches, building partnerships, coalitions and networks and supporting partners to develop organisational capacity to deliver high quality WASH programmes.

The role holder will establish and maintain linkages with other thematic areas ¡n the country programme and link with Oxfam campaigns, policy influencing and advocacy teams at a regional and global level.

Occasionally, as required by the programme design, the WASH strategist will be called upon to manage contracted programme or project staff. A key area of work is to fundraise for the programme and, to generate and manage knowledge resources through linkages with research and knowledge focused institutions.
