Position Summary: Based in Nairobi, the incumbent will serve as the Operations Manager, reporting to the Managing Director.

He/she will be in charge of the overall management of a non-bank microfinance institution, including providing clear leadership and direction to the institution, innovative financial products/services to target clientele, ensuring solid operating and financial performance, recruiting and developing the talent needed to accomplish high performance standards and overseeing new operational systems and procedures.

He/she will have primary responsibility for achieving the ambitious growth strategy developed and for positioning the company as a leading provider of high quality financial services to the its niche market.

This will include assuming leadership in four key areas:

  • Management
  • Business development and Strategic planning
  • Human resource and talent development
  • Communications and external stakeholder relations

Position Requirements

  • A bachelor degree in finance, banking, economics or finance is desirable
  • At least 6 years of direct experience in financial services, at least 3 of which should have been in senior management position in microfinance, a retail banking or similar financial services company
  • General knowledge of a wide range of micro banking products, including loans and savings
  • Experience in credit origination and credit risk assessment for short term products in a lending environment
  • Comprehensive but not technical knowledge of legal and contemporary issues in lending
  • Advanced knowledge of retail banking operations, products and services as well as knowledge of standard banking compliance regulations, banking law, business law, employment and labor law, internal operational policies and procedures
  • Demonstrated experience leading and building cohesive, high performing teams
  • Strong analytical, interpersonal, communication and influencing skills
  • Ability to delegate effectively amongst teams and show commitment to the long-term development of the management team through coaching and mentoring
  • Comfortable in a fluid environment, self-directed, flexible and creative
  • Supervise a micro – loan team, manage brand champions and set targets according to individual score cards
  • Monitor customer service and appraisal standards by visiting field officers in their various locations, ensuring company brand and KPI are achieved

Reports to: Managing Director

Supervises: Will manage the day-to-day operations of the institution by providing clear leadership and guidance to all functions of the institution including Finance, Operations, Administration, HR, IT.

Essential Duties / Responsibilities:

Overall Management and Governance

  • Execute the policy decisions
  • Drive organizational performance to achieve business plan targets
  • Uphold standards of risk management at all levels and ensure effective supervisory control and management review
  • Monitor and evaluate the business performance to generate a healthy portfolio on a monthly basis, including client satisfaction metrics
  • Develop requisite organizational policies, tools, processes
  • Establish and sustain a customer-centric business culture, leveraging on people and technology
  • Provide leadership for compliance with statutory requirements

Business Development and Strategic Planning

  • Develop annual and long term plans and budgets, incorporating input from the different departments
  • Set financial and operational performance targets for all key operating units and oversee the implementation of budgets and strategic plans
  • Set employee performance standards required to achieve short and long term objectives of the company
  • Responsible for profitability and portfolio growth
  • Lead the company’s expansion into new geographic areas in the country
  • Effective cost and processes management
  • Provide business development and marketing support for overall growth of the company
  • Champion innovative business ideas and products
  • Enhance and build a positive brand image for the company
  • Oversee credit risk framework, implement credit strategies, policies and procedures in line with the company’s corporate strategy and ensure compliance.
  • Taking lead in sourcing for strategic partnerships and managing the relationships with the various stakeholders

Human Resource and Talent Development

  • Build a strong and effective management team
  • Establish an effective and competent participatory management style
  • Implement performance management system for senior management team
  • Oversee and support the development and implementation of effective HR policies and procedures for recruitment, training and talent development
  • Motivate all staff and ensure that staffs are dedicated to the objectives of the company
  • Mentor and coach staff

Communications and External Stakeholder Relations

  • Build the company’s reputation as a company committed to excellent client services, both internally and externally
  • Maintain solid relations with shareholders and external parties, including investors, and other business partners
  • Ensure quality information flow to investors, regulators and other stakeholders as relevant
  • Where applicable, undertake public relations activities including crisis management to maintain a positive image of the company
