About Innovations for Poverty Action: Innovations for Poverty Action (IPA) is an international non-profit research organization dedicated to discovering and promoting effective solutions to global poverty problems.

IPA works in partnership with development partners and academic researchers to create and evaluate approaches potential solutions to poverty problems using randomized evaluations in the fields of health, education, microfinance, governance and agriculture. We also mobilize and support these decision makers to use these solutions to build better programs and policies at scale.

About the project: The Africa Gender Innovation Lab’s long-term goal is to close the gender gap in Africa, specifically with regards to women’s economic empowerment by producing new evidence for decision-makers in government and the private sector on what does and does not work in addressing the underlying causes of gender inequality, and how best to close gender gaps in earnings, productivity, and assets. GIL believes that SES might be an important piece of this puzzle.

Under the proposed SES work program, GIL will pursue two main goals: Identify which SES are most critical to women’s economic empowerment (WEE) in Sub-Saharan Africa and (2) Increase understanding of the extent to which different interventions effectively increase these SES, and in turn impact women’s earnings employment and entrepreneurship.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Research Associate will perform a variety of tasks including, but not limited to:

  • Work closely with the PIs throughout the design and implementation of the study
  • Coordinate research and implementation efforts with all relevant stakeholders
  • Hire, train and manage a team of managers and field staff
  • Develop SOPs for data collection, management, cleaning and analysis of survey data
  • Supervise data collection of pilot, census, baseline and end line surveys ensuring data quality at all stages
  • Assist in data cleaning and analysis and ensuring ready access to both raw and clean files and their associated do files
  • Ensure compliance with IPA data quality, documentation and security protocols
  • Assist in the development and piloting the survey instruments, including programming questions onto a Survey CTO and managing the translation of the survey into the local languages.
  • Create and maintain a proper project log, documentation and supporting materials for all project activity and output
  • Prepare progress and results reports to PIs, research partners, and funding agencies in a timely manner
  • Manage the budget to ensure all expenses are within project budget


  • A Bachelor’s (required) or Master’s degree (preferred) in economics, statistics, public policy, international development, or related fields;
  • At least 3 years of work experience, preferably in a research setting
  • Familiarity with randomized controlled trials;
  • Strong quantitative skills and very good knowledge of Stata required; programming and other technical knowledge a strong plus;
  • Working knowledge of programming on Survey CTO/ODK
  • Excellent project management and organizational skills; meticulous attention to detail; ability to work independently;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English, including ability to effectively communicate with internal and external stakeholders;
