Farm Supervisor

Location: Karen

Job Summary: You will be responsible for the administrative, financial and physical performance of the farm and as such will be highly skilled in all aspects of the farm business. The responsibilities involve planning and carrying out the day to day operational aspects of the stock and crop production management, with the key objective being to maximize the productivity and profitability of the property, without compromising farm condition, stock or human resources.

Key duties and responsibilities:

Crop production

  • Decide the type of crops to be planted, its quality, quantity, and mode of harvest, preparing detailed plans regarding its planting and harvesting schedules, and collaborating with farm operators for carrying out these activities;
  • Perform laborious farm activities like driving tractors on field, operating field based machinery and equipment, spraying fertilizers on field;
  • Manage all on-farm activities to include planning of all seeding, nursery, growing and harvesting, sorting, packaging and pruning;
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of pests and diseases and an understanding of how they spread and how to treat them;
  • Ensure that farm activities comply with government regulations;
  • Monitor the production and yield quality of crops;

Financial Management

  • Plan and prepare finance reports;
  • Set up budget limit for various farm activities, and maintaining the farm activities in agreement with the budgeted parameters;
  • Monitor seasonal expenditure in line with the budgeted cash flow;


  • Buy the farm supplies like seeds, fertilizers, pesticides;
  • Arrange the repair and maintenance of field equipment, machinery, etc;
  • Ensure that farm activities comply with government regulations;
  • Providing periodic operations reports to the management team, reporting on progress vs. targets and production reports as required by management;
  • Handling paperwork and keeping administrative records;

Personnel management

  • Supervise day-to-day activity, organize rosters and schedule tasks/activities that need to be undertaken;
  • Assist in hiring full time/ temporary farm employees
  • Train and coach staff to enable them to competently carry out tasks required of them on farm;
  • Review, implement and improve health and safety policies and procedures;
  • Ensure new staff are inducted and aware of company policies and are given role clarity;
  • Ensure proper clothing is worn during the handling of any produce or while within the farm.

Skills and competencies

  • Minimum diploma in Agricultural Sciences;
  • Minimum of three (3) years’ experience as a farm manager/supervisor;
  • Should have excellent managerial skills;
  • Report writing skills;
  • The ability to work under pressure;
  • Knowledge of food production and an awareness of customer demand, food standards and sustainability.
