Finance Manager (1 Post) – Turkana County

We are delighted to be recruiting for a talented Finance Manager to join our team in Lodwar, Turkana County.

Reporting to the Head of Services, the Finance Manager (FM) will be a core part of the Mary’s Meals Kenya Finance Team, with primary responsibility for our in-country statutory and management accounting processes.

Leading a small team, he/she will supervise our periodic financial reporting processes and will provide hands-on support to our in-country programme delivery and operations.

The key focus for this role shall be:

a) financial management and reporting;

b) ensuring strong statutory, regulatory compliance and management accounting;

c) maintaining and strengthening a robust system of internal financial control and ensuring its adherence across the programme.

The Finance Manager shall be a hands-on and participative leader, coach and mentor who will be part of an internal team to support in the areas of Finance, Asset management and ICT.

Key duties & responsibilities for the role include:

Financial Management

  • To lead in the robust overall financial management of the Kenya programme in line with Mary’s Meals financial processes and policies.
  • To guide, advise and support the finance team in the management of the organizational cash flow, payables, and receivables.
  • To manage effective and consistent implementation of financial and accounting policies and procedures.
  • To develop and implement best practice finance and administrative systems, working with MMI Finance colleagues.
  • To oversee the management of the fixed asset register.
  • To pro-actively advise on general financial matters or financial risks to the Head of Services.

Financial Reporting and Management Accounting

  • • To supervise the month end processes, including the accurate and timely posting of all required journal entries.
    • To lead the production of a high-quality management accounts pack, including detailed analytics and commentary, and ensure they are submitted within the agreed deadlines
    • To lead in the preparation and timely submission of the year-end financial reports.
    • To oversee the annual audit process, including preparation of all audit deliverables.
    • To review and submit routine management and donor reports.


  • To assist the Head of Services in preparing annual budget in consultation relevant departments.
  • To prepare quarterly budget reviews, in consultation with the Head of Services.
  • To provide timely information and commentary to support the monthly budget vs actual monitoring process.

Statutory and Regulatory Compliance

  • To lead the production of the Annual Accounts in line with UK GAAP (Charities SORP (FRS 102)) and in-country statutory requirements and liaise with external auditors to ensure a smooth audit process throughout the year.
  • To manage compliance with all relevant Charity, Company and Tax legislation through timely submission of statutory filings and remittances.

Financial Systems and Controls

  • To ensure quality control over the completion and recording of financial transactions and financial reporting.
  • To maintain day-to-day compliance with the Scheme of Financial Delegation.
  • To ensure accurate, timely recording and management of restricted funding.
  • To support the HR department in payroll management by delivering accurate and timely payment to all staff.
  • To evaluate, develop and implement appropriate financial systems and liaise with suppliers/3rd party providers as required.
  • To provide training, support, and guidance to users of financial systems.
  • To specify, test and implement interfaces between financial systems and other management information systems.

Governance, Technology and Administration:

  • Maintain key organizational documents and records.
  • Support the Head of Services to ensure that the Mary’s Meals Kenya programme is accredited and compliant with all legal requirements, in cooperation with the appropriate line Ministries.
  • To work with the Mary’s Meals International IT and Operations team to ensure the ongoing maintenance and updating of information systems and infrastructure, including hardware, software, and applications.
  • To ensure that IT services and systems are well set up and maintained in all sites.

External Representation

  • Managing and maintaining of excellent relations with all of Mary’s Meals partners, stakeholders, and visitors.


  • To directly supervise the Finance Officer(s) and ensure that his/her direct reports are managed in a pro-active and supportive manner to encourage high standards and best practice in all aspects of programme delivery.
  • Lead, coach, and mentor his/her team in their respective functions to maintain high standards and to ensure close and supportive supervision of staff.
  • Assist in the management of Human Resource related emerging issues including assisting with disciplinary action and grievance hearings, when appropriate and required, in conjunction with the HR & Administration Manager and the Head of Services.
  • To be a member and active participant of the Extended Leadership Team (ELT)


  • To contribute to the establishment of a positive, healthy, and safe work environment in accordance with appropriate legislation and regulations.
  • To create a culture of collaboration and continuous learning where staff are encouraged and supported to grow and develop and are held accountable for their actions.
  • Other duties commensurate with the role.

Qualifications, Skills, and Experience


  • Degree in a relevant subject (e.g. Accountancy, Logistics, Supply Chain Management, business administration) or equivalent level professional experience is essential.
  • CPAK qualified, or equivalent, with at least 5 years post qualification experience
  • Fluent written and spoken English
  • Able to communicate well across all levels
  • Able to work well with people of different cultures and nationalities
  • Advanced team leadership and management skills
  • Advanced and well-developed inter-personal skills, with solid track record in persuading and influencing others
  • Proven ability to lead a team to drive forward and consolidate change and influence behaviours
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel and Word
  • Extensive experience of budget and financial management and implementation of internal control frameworks


  • Proven project management skills
  • Understanding of the principles of international development
  • Understanding of the place of school feeding in relief and development
  • Familiarity with using planning tools in international development, including using and developing monitoring and evaluation systems for logistics/systems.
  • Experience of working in a charity or non-governmental organisation
