Kenya HealthFin Diaries: Georgetown University (gui²de) in Kenya and Ekko Insights are collaborating on a new research project aimed at developing a detailed understanding of health experience and health-seeking behavior among Kenyan families, contextualized within the realities of household finances.

This research will involve recruiting more than 300 families to participate and supporting a team of full-time researchers visiting these families every two weeks for one year to collect detailed data on household finances and health experiences.

This research is meant to inform key decision makers and practitioners in the health and financial services space as well as to provide up-to-date insights to the development community more broadly.

Role Summary: The Field Supervisor will play a critical role in managing and overseeing field operations for the HealthFin Diaries Research Project, ensuring data collection is conducted according to the project protocols and timelines.

The Field Supervisor will support and manage the field team (12 enumerators), conduct data validation visits, troubleshoot problems in the field, maintain good relationships with participating communities and households, manage field logistics, ensure timely submission of field data, and proactively report any field challenges to the Research Manager.

We are seeking someone passionate about research, meticulous in their review of carefully collected, complex data, and with a track record of excellent, supportive supervision.

Key Responsibilities:

Community Relationships (15%)

  • Collaborate with the Principal Investigator and Research Manager on the selection and preparation of field sites;
  • Retain the interest and trust of all diaries participants by periodically visiting respondents and ensuring positive relationships are maintained between field
    staff and respondents as well as respondents’ larger communities;

Enumerator Support and Supervision (70%)

  • Support recruitment of field staff based on criteria agreed with with Georgetown and Ekko;
  • Assist in training Research Assistants on research tools, ethics, and data collection techniques both in training sessions and on the job;
  • Provide guidance, motivation, and performance feedback to research assistants to help them do their best work and achieve personal project goals;
  • Monitor and verify the accuracy and completeness of data collected by research assistants with support from the data analyst and research manager;
  • Conduct data validation visits, data checks, and interview observations to ensure that all data collection is completed with the highest standards of professionalism,
    accuracy, and integrity;
  • Document and report field challenges, including participant feedback and logistical issues;
  • Ensure that all field activities adhere to ethical guidelines and research protocols;
  • Participate in daily coordination calls between the head office and field teams to track progress and immediately address fieldwork challenges on enumerators’
    behalfs; and
  • Coordinate and troubleshoot all fieldwork logistics;
  • With the Research Manager, support periodic performance reviews for the field team.

Insight Generation (15%)

  • Proactively report back to Research Manager on any challenges arising from the field, interesting insights, or other topics of interest or concern;
  • Periodically share insights and challenges from the field to shape research directions and work collaboratively on resolving problems;
  • Participate in data collection for small number of households and/or module data collection to maintain a grounded perspective on the research;
  • Engage in weekly reflection calls for insight generation and documentation;
  • Contribute to analytical outputs for public dissemination.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences, Anthropology, or any other related field
  • At least 3 years of experience in field supervision for research or data collection projects
  • Strong leadership and team management skills
  • Excellent organizational and problem-solving abilities
  • Proficiency in using mobile data collection tools and software
  • Ability to work independently and in a team
  • Ability and willingness to travel frequently within Kenya
  • Detail-oriented with a commitment to high data quality standard
  • Flexibility to travel to remote areas outside Nairobi

Duration: Full-time from April 2025 through March 2027.
