Description

PURPOSE

We are looking for a knowledgeable and experienced Farm Manager to be in charge of our Eldoret agricultural operations. Strong leadership qualities, a love for agriculture, and a track record of running profitable farming enterprises are requirements for the perfect applicant.

To guarantee maximum production and profitability, the farm manager will be in charge of organizing, carrying out, and overseeing all aspects of farm operations.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS

  1. Develop and implement comprehensive farm plans for crop selection, cultivation, and harvest.
  2. Oversee land preparation activities such as plowing, tilling, and leveling.
  3. Manage irrigation systems to ensure proper water supply to crops, especially during dry periods.
  4. Coordinate and supervise planting activities, including seed selection and sowing.
  5. Monitor crop health and growth, identifying and addressing pest and disease issues promptly.
  6. Implement fertilization schedules and soil management practices to optimize crop yields.
  7. Plan and execute weed control measures, including manual weeding and herbicide application.
  8. Monitor weather conditions and adjust farming practices accordingly to minimize risks.
  9. Supervise harvesting operations, ensuring timely and efficient gathering of crops.
  10. Manage post-harvest activities, including sorting, cleaning, and packaging of produce.
  11. Maintain accurate records of farm activities, including crop yields, expenses, and revenues.
  12. Analyze data to evaluate farm performance and identify areas for improvement.
  13. Develop and manage budgets for farm operations, ensuring cost-effective resource utilization.
  14. Procure agricultural inputs such as seeds, fertilizers, and pesticides from reliable suppliers.
  15. Maintain farm infrastructure and equipment, ensuring proper functionality and safety.
  16. Hire, train, and supervise farm workers, providing guidance and support as needed.
  17. Enforce safety protocols and ensure compliance with health and environmental regulations.
  18. Collaborate with agronomists, extension agents, and researchers to implement best practices.
  19. Conduct regular inspections of fields and facilities to maintain high standards of cleanliness and organization.
  20. Participate in community outreach and extension activities to promote agricultural education and awareness.
  21. Develop and maintain relationships with local markets, buyers, and distributors.
  22. Negotiate contracts and pricing agreements with vendors and buyers.
  23. Monitor market trends and adjust crop selection and production accordingly.
  24. Implement sustainable farming practices to conserve natural resources and protect the environment.
  25. Implement crop rotation and diversification strategies to improve soil health and mitigate risks.
  26. Conduct regular soil tests and analysis to optimize nutrient management practices.
  27. Implement integrated pest management strategies to minimize reliance on chemical pesticides.
  28. Participate in farmer cooperatives and associations to access resources and market opportunities.
  29. Stay updated on industry trends, new technologies, and government policies affecting agriculture.
  30. Represent the farm in meetings, conferences, and events related to agriculture and rural development.

QUALIFICATION, EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE

  • Bachelor's degree in Agriculture, Agronomy, Horticulture, or related field; advanced degree preferred.
  • Proven experience (5+ years) in farm management, preferably in a similar agricultural setting.
  • Strong knowledge of crop production techniques, soil management practices, and agricultural machinery operation.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively manage a diverse team.
  • Sound decision-making abilities, problem-solving skills, and attention to detail.
  • Familiarity with agricultural regulations, safety standards, and best practices.
  • Proficiency in computer applications for recordkeeping, data analysis, and farm management software.
  • Flexibility to work long hours, weekends, and holidays as needed, especially during peak seasons.
  • Valid driver's license and willingness to travel within the region as required.
